REPORT ON ATTENDING THE APEC-TSUKUBA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE V: INNOVATION OF CLASSROOM TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH LESSON STUDY, FOCUSING ON MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOKS, E-TEXTBOOKS AND EDUCATIONAL TOOLS. TOKYO AND TSUKUBA, JAPAN, 15 – 21 FEBRUARY, 2011
This international level conference was attended by prominent mathematics educators from 5 continents, except Africa, such as Max Stevens and Peter Gould (from Australia), Catherine Lewis (from USA), Ivan Vysotsky (from Rusia, Europe), and Simizu Shizumi (from Japan, Asia). Due to the importance of the meeting and conference to the QITEP in Mathematics; therefore the delegation of QITEP in Mathematics was participated in that activity as part of benchmark activity of the SEAMEO QITEP in Mathematics.

While solving mathematical problem, investigating and exploring mathematical tasks, students should be facilitated to learn and reflect on what they have already done; awaken to the many truths of the importance of strategies, the usefulness of mathematical process, the beauty of mathematics and the value and attitude that can be evolved. Highly successful teachers of Mathematics are active, lifelong learners. They engage in professional learning processes that include collegial interaction, professional reading and active exploration of new teaching ideas, practices and resources in the classroom. They reflect on practice and the new knowledge they gain, and learn from their experiences. Their active participation is based on their commitment to attaining the best possible outcomes for all learners and to help build the capacity of other educators. (The AAMT Position Statement regarding Professional Learning, AAMT, 2013)
The ability to think and to reason is very important to everyone and to every nation. Therefore our students should be the focus of our teaching and learning of mathematics. Regarding the students, the questions can be aroused were: what should be done and how to help and facilitate students to learn mathematics meaningfully, joyfully and to learn to think and to learn by him/herself. Regarding the mathematics teachers, the questions can be aroused, what should be done and how to help and facilitate mathematics teachers in such a way that they can change their teaching and learning process such that they can help the learners to learn mathematics: (1) meaningfully, (2) joyfully, (3) to learn to think and (4) be independent learners.
